Benjamin Lewis Director of Bands
Ben Lewis has been the Director of Bands at South Garland since the Fall semester of 2019.
Mr. Lewis was born and raised in Garland, TX, and attended Lakeview Centennial High School, where he graduated in 2006 before attending the University of Texas at Arlington. While at UTA, Mr. Lewis studied under some of the top musicians in the state, including Ed Jones, Douglas Stotter, Matthew Luttrell, and many more. Mr. Lewis graduated Magna Cum Laude in the Fall of 2010.
Prior to working at South Garland, Mr. Lewis worked as a music and marching technician for Wakeland High School in Frisco, TX where he helped the band make the state marching band competition twice and then performed his student teaching at Rowlett High School in 2010, when they also made the state competition. Mr. Lewis then worked at Jackson Technology Center beginning in 2011, where he served as the Associate Band Director and Brass specialist initially, before advancing to the Head Director position 3 years later. During his time at Jackson, Mr. Lewis received consistent sweepstakes and 1st division awards, increased the number of participants in Region and District Bands, and saw the program grow to almost 400 students.
Barry Martin Associate Director of Bands
Barry Martin has been the Associate Director of Bands at South Garland since the Spring semester of 2019.
Mr. Martin was born in Tyler, Texas. He spent his middle and high school years in a small country town called Arp, Texas. While there he discovered his love for music and band. He competed in All-Region TMEA/ ATSSB competitions where he qualified for state twice as a percussionist and a jazz pianist. He also competed in Solo and Ensemble qualifying for state all 4 years in High School.
After graduation he began studying music education at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA). Mr. Martin studied Percussion under Dr. Bradley Meyer, and performed in many ensembles such as Orchestras, Latin Bands, Jazz Bands, Percussion Ensembles, Wind Ensembles, Steel Bands, and more. While marching with SFA's marching band, he was able to march in the 2015 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 2017 Mr. Martin auditioned for the Disneyland Resort All American College Band, California. While working for Disney he played with some of the worlds greatest musicians such as Wayne Bergeron, Gordon Goodwin, John Clayton, Greg Fields and more.
Mr. Martin worked with grades K-12 while studying at SFA . His intense passion for music and music education derives from his experiences with the musicians, mentors, and colleagues he met and watched over his musical career. South Garland High School gave Mr. Martin his first band director job!
